About Anesthesia
Anesthesia is a medical specialty focused on relieving pain and supporting patient safety during procedures and surgery. The main types are general, regional, and local anesthesia.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia is commonly used for more extensive procedures. The patient is unconscious while anesthesia is administered and monitored.
Regional Anesthesia
Regional anesthesia is used for specific areas of the body, such as arms, legs, or childbirth-related care. Depending on the procedure, the patient may or may not be fully awake.
Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia numbs a specific area. Sedation or pain medication may also be administered through an IV when appropriate.
Who Administers Anesthesia?
An anesthesiologist is a physician who has completed medical school and specialized residency training in anesthesiology.
